Doujinshi is a Japanese term for self-published works. These are often manga or novels, and frequently (but not always) explicit in nature. They may be original content, or the equivalent of fan-fiction for existing series.
Many mangaka (manga creators) get started with doujinshi, such as Rumiko Takahashi, the creator of Ranma ½ and Inuyasha. Others, like Ken Akamatsu (Love Hina, Negima), continue creating doujinshi even after being published traditionally.
With sites like FAKKU and Irodori now providing high-quality English translations of doujinshi, it only seems right that those works receive the same level of care and attention as traditionally published manga.
Just because a product is erotic or adult content doesn’t mean its consumers should be forced to make purchases without knowing if it’s right for them. Similarily, we think that the creators and translators of these products deserve recognition for their works, and not to be treated with scorn.
Here at Lewd Reviews, we have a strict no-piracy stance. We believe in the commercial value and integrity of artists. Doujinshi are sold for-profit at Comiket and online stores in Japan; just because it’s “porn” doesn’t take away its value, nor the hard work of its creators.
Doujinshi are often of an extremely high quality, equivalent to a published manga. It should be treated with the same level of respect. All doujinshi reviewed on this site have been legally translated and purchased or received as review copies.
